Formal essays are a high level of writing. They are usually assigned in colleges. Their aim is to teach you use correct words (fancy professors call it the diction), and the overall tone of essay writing (the French would answer, that bad formal essays are mauvais tone).

Usually in formal essay supervisors look for predictable features. First of them is the overall structure. Here a formal essay doesn’t differ much from any other kind of essay writing. Formal essays include a strong introduction with a good, clearly formulated and stated thesis. They also need a persuasive development of a topic, which you present in the main body, and, finally, formal essays include a conclusion. Note that it has to summarize and give a relevant thought as to something your reader has to think over.

As to tone and diction, reject goofy and funky ways of addressing. In a formal essay you speak in a formal capacity. You don’t have to go over basic terms because you audience is familiar with the topic. Formal essays are like a message to colleagues. Use persuasive, self-assure words like “facts show”, “out of this I draw a conclusion that” and… you know, be formal
